Working with volunteers

Change Direction Case Study

Working with volunteers

Across West Yorkshire people are supporting the work of probation and helping offenders to turn their lives round.

The volunteers come from a range of backgrounds, including:

  • ex-offenders
  • students and graduates
  • members of the public.

All our volunteers recognise that people can change and want to be part of that process.

They support those currently on probation in a range of ways, working closely with Probation Officers. Their support can include:

  • listening to offenders
  • helping arrange benefits
  • supporting offenders to go to appointments, or meetings
  • helping people find local support groups or local organisations who can help them
  • setting up bank accounts
  • accessing training or even university courses.
